  • Mô tả: The consistency between fields and particle motion in the region of the current sheet where the field lines link through the current sheet has been investigated. Consistent fields together with the particle trajectories have been found for the case where the plasma is cold and noiseless. The proton trajectories (Speiser, 1965), although various types of electron trajectory are possible. The cross tail electric field is shown to depend only on the magnetic field and plasma density; consequently the cross tail potential depends on the width of the tail, and can be much greater than the Alfvén potential (Alfvén, 1968). Finally, it is pointed out that although this model only describes a small region of the tail, it provides a starting point for studying the dynamic interaction of particles and field in the current sheet geometry. Two obvious effects of this interaction are shown to be thinning of the current sheet and heating of the plasma....
