  • Mô tả: McNeil critically examines Paule Marshall's third novel "Praisesong for the Widow" (1983)--a book which uses myth, ritual, and folklore with even more emphasis than her previous books. This book follows the steps of the protagonists's ancestral Gullah "seeker's" initiation rite, which was the metaphysical practice of nearly all Africans who were transplanted to the Americas during slavery. An investigation of the initiation rite in Marshall's book not only offers a uniquely Afrocentric window in the core of the text, but also offers insight into the significance of the trope more generally in post-Civil Rights-era literature by African American women, it is argued.
