  • Mô tả: Cell adhesion molecules of the cadherin and immunoglobulin cell adhesion molecule (IgCAM) families play critical roles in the regulation of cell–cell interactions during all phases of embryonic development as well as in maintaining the integrity of adult tissues. These critical morphogenetic molecules are receiving increased attention as potential targets of developmental toxicant action, since many of these compounds may exert their deleterious effects on development through modulation of cell adhesion molecule expression and function. This chapter discusses recent evidence for such interactions, in particular the experimental analysis of heavy metal and organic solvent effects on cadherins and IgCAMs. The accumulating evidence provides strong experimental support for such interactions and underscores the need for further studies into the underlying mechanisms in order to lead to better preventive and therapeutic interventions to ameliorate the effects of these important gene–environment interactions involving these environmental developmental toxicants.
