  • Mô tả: The first empirical user test of a prototype for a new programming environment is described. The programming environment was designed to work with Dylan, a new object-oriented programming language. The prototype's user interface showed the menu structure of the environment and provided a set of tools for performing a limited number of programming tasks. The test had 2 objectives. The first was to debug the usability of several critical parts of the user interface. The 2nd objective was to discover how programmers viewed the capabilities of this new programming environment. In order to meet these objectives, the methods commonly used to conduct a user test are modified by having a test administrator probe the subject's thinking at key points in the test. The usability test uncovered several important usability problems and uncovered how programmers were thinking about the new environment. This has confirmed the belief that usability testing is a valuable method for exposing usability problems and exploring ways that programmers think about programming.
