  • Mô tả: The ratification of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol has been the major issue on the agenda of diplomats and politicians engaged in global environmental diplomacy. Under the protocol, 38 countries agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5% from 1990 levels by 2008-2012. However, Australia made the goal of limiting its greenhouse gas emissions to 108% of its 1990 level, angering other signatories of the Protocol and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). This article discusses the importance of Australia ratifying the Protocol. It outlines the economic and political concerns regarding the government policy process and capacity in global environmental diplomacy. The effectiveness of environmental diplomacy in meeting future challenges is evaluated. 41 References.
